A Walk Through the Treetops - Lynn LeBoutillier

Essay:

This photo entry was also taken in Singapore on our free day in Santosa Island , on June 1 st 2005, on the southern most tip of Asia . This area was perfect for a photographer, with so many beautiful photo opportunities. I thought that this photo had extreme relevancy to our study abroad experience because it depicted Singapore 's economy. Singapore is a rich country, but only in human capital. They have no goods to export, therefore, they have to import 100 percent of all the goods that they consume. Every student, tour guide, or citizen explained to the students that the cargo boats were a huge part of their lives. Singapore has the busiest port in the whole world. Twenty four hours a day there is always ships unloading at their shores, or sitting at bay patiently waiting their turn to deliver. I thought this photo illustrated their importing economy quite well, with the ship waiting it's turn to deliver the he cranes further in the background that help unload the goods. This was also the most gorgeous sunsets that I had ever seen and I believe will ever see. It almost seems as though it was not real, but "Santosa Sunstet" truly was experienced by me!
