Financial Answers

1. Does financial aid apply to study abroad programs?

Yes! Any financial aid awards (scholarships, loans, grants) can be applied to cover the cost of the program. In most cases students on SCSU programs are even eligible to collect work study while they are abroad. Usually this means that they act as an assistant to the academic director or resident coordinator.

* * A new procedure has been implemented and students going on an International Studies Program are now being notified of their increased loan eligibility by email rather than paper letter. This notification will be sent to their HuskyNet email address. The email notification will inform them of their new loan eligibility and will include links to apply for the various loans along with a link to their award letter. * * top

2. I am not a St. Cloud State University student. Can I apply my financial aid to the program fee?

Yes! Contact your home school’s Financial Aid Office to arrange a consortium agreement. Also contact your school’s study abroad office to check on other requirements that they may have for you. The SCSU Center for International Studies requires you to submit a copy of the financial aid letter that you receive from your home school and the procedures for transferring the funds to St. Cloud State University. top

3. Where can I get the money to pay the $1200 that is due before my financial aid can be applied to my program fee?

There are a few options for making the $1200 payment (usually paid in three installments of $400). You can make payments in cash, check, or use a credit card. If you personally cannot cover the cost, check with family members or friends. If you anticipate receiving financial aid to cover the program fee, any excess financial aid can be used to pay this source back. Another suggestion is to take out any financial aid that you did not previously accept during the semester preceding your study abroad program. For example, this means that if you were awarded $5,000 in financial aid for fall semester and you initially only accepted $3,000, you can go back and accept the remaining financial aid. top

4. What scholarships are available to students studying abroad?

The Center for International Studies understands the financial commitment prospective students are planning when they decide to study abroad. The Center for International Studies offers a Study Abroad Scholarship to Saint Cloud State University students. The scholarship application can be found at the back of the general application. This scholarship is limited to SCSU students who are studying abroad, demonstrate financial need and submit an essay. Several scholarships are awarded each semester, with an average award amount of $500.00. In addition, CIS offers additional scholarship opportunities which are available at our office. Another place to look for scholarships is within your major or minor department. Scholarships for study abroad are also available through non-SCSU organizations. Visit any of the following sites on the internet to get more information: top

5. What are the cancellation fees that apply to withdrawing from a study abroad program?

Students will be responsible for paying any unrecoverable costs that have been paid by the Center for International Studies. If the student cancels within 60 days of departure, an additional fee of $250.00 will be assessed. top

6. What does the program fee cover?

The program fee generally covers room, roundtrip airfare, cultural excursions and events, and general administrative costs. SCSU tuition and fees will be added to the program fee. Please refer to the specific program information for more details. top
