Memories of Alnwick
Mary Montagne ’78 ’80, St. Paul,
Minn., Alnwick 1976-77
My year studying at Alnwick was one of the best
experiences of my college career and my life. I was attracted
by the romantic fantasy of living in a castle. Reality
was even better. I loved the beauty of the castle and
Northumberland and the sense of old history in England.
The
experiential learning was wonderful. Our British professors
took us to Hadrian’s Wall and villages
along the North Sea as we learned about history and geography.
I learned fencing at the castle. We had a reception
with the Duke (Hugh Percy) and Duchess of Northumberland.
Traveling in Europe over the holidays was another highlight.
I gained a broader perspective of the world and my own
American culture and an appreciation of good, generous,
people all over the world. Dutch students stayed at the
castle for a month to study English and a group of us later
studied in the Netherlands for a month. The year enhanced
my love of travel, adventure, and sense of curiosity.
Over the years, I lived in France, traveled
to many countries, and volunteered in programs serving
international visitors. I have returned to Alnwick twice and am planning
a trip there in May 2006. It has been fun to see the castle
in the Harry Potter movies. I would highly recommend
studying abroad. It builds confidence and cultural
competence.
