Memories of Alnwick
Marisa Adler Vette ’01 Fall 2000 Alnwick program
I was one of the lucky ones who studied in Alnwick during
the filming of the first Harry Potter movie. In fact, the
Quiddich scene from the movie took place right outside my
bedroom windows in Lower Diana. A bunch of us even watched
– up close and personal – the filming of the
shot in which a child unexpectedly flies through the air
on his broom. We stood behind the monitors along with the
movie crew and were able to see the raw footage of the movie,
including the playbacks, as it was being filmed.
Of course, seeing all of the child actors running around
in cloaks naturally made a bunch of us curious as to what
this book was all about, so it was not unusual to see a
college student reading the “children’s book”
around the castle. What we found when we read the book,
as millions of readers did, was the books were fascinating
at any age.
Once I returned home from my study-abroad experience, I
re-lived the moments a few times in the theater by going
to see the movie. I ended up seeing the movie in various
theaters a total of seven times because different people
wanted me to go with them to be able to point out different
interesting tidbits in the film – both about the castle
and about film itself.
Being able to say I lived in a castle for our four months
is exciting in itself, but the interest escalates even more
when people learn I lived and studied at “Hogwarts!”
