Memories of Alnwick
Danielle Williquett Savitt ’99, St. Paul, Minn.,
Alnwick 1998
My time spent in Alnwick left me forever changed. The
networking experience was fabulous; faculty and students
alike become close, their lives intertwined in ways impossible
to achieve on a traditional U.S. campus. The learning experience
was profound and relevant – you’re actually
standing on Hadrian’s Wall as your history teacher
(Christine, an England native) identifies for you the impact
of that place, the life and activity it once had. I consider
everyone from the program to be friends for a lifetime regardless
of how infrequently we connect these 8 years later. We laughed
together, loved together, hurt together, cried together,
lived together, learned together, ate together, traveled
together…but most importantly, we changed together.
We managed to learn almost everything about each other’s
pasts and lived vicariously through each other’s experiences
abroad in the hundreds of cultures and countries suddenly
within our grasps. I look back on my life there with only
the fondest memories. But for me, the most powerful way
the program exerted its influence was related to my self-confidence
and comfort with just being me. I didn’t see the results
necessarily during the program or immediately thereafter,
but have since come to realize that it was this program
that laid the foundations for me to confidently step outside
of my safe self, my everyday me, to take risks, have adventures
and be willing to truly accept what life has to offer. You
learn so much about yourself and your potential. The impact
is lasting, important and proves to influence nearly every
major life decision you make.
