Memories of Alnwick
Susan Sworski Massman ’89, Kimball, Minn., Alnwick
Fall 1986-87
My SCSU experience in Alnwick, Northumberland, will always
have a special place in my heart. The memories are with
me forever, and every once in awhile I am fortunate to share
them with others, such as giving a short presentation to
my son’s sixth grade class last spring. After 19 years,
some things seem like they were just yesterday.
Participating in SCSU’s British Studies Program is
definitely a major highlight in my life. Shortly after I
returned home, I realized the personal growth and development
that had taken place within me. The experience had helped
me mature, had given me the self-confidence which I needed,
and had provided an opportunity to become the adult I am.
The setting, of course, is most spectacular. To live in
a castle is far beyond some people’s imaginations.
To show pictures of the castle and beautiful grounds, the
people and culture is such a joy for me. The learning experience
was unique, having both SCSU and British professors.
Studying in a castle was complemented with the great fieldtrips
available to us. We had wonderful staff – thank you,
Ray and Phyllis Collins and family, Lisa Gray, Lowell and
Marcy Mortrude, Mary and Charlie Boltuck, Marilyn and Jim
Stinson and family. You were a great help!
Most of all, I treasure the friendships I have because
of the Alnwick program. As with other friends, my homestay
and I have been in contact for 18 Christmases and sometimes
in between. What a delight to hear her voice after I had
my fourth child two years ago! She is truly part of the
family, even though I have not seen her since my stay at
the castle.
To each of us participants, SCSU’s International
Studies program means something specific, something cherished.
I would love to return to Alnwick to see the people and
places which are a part of me – to know a short period
of time has had such a large effect on my life!
