Memories of Alnwick

Carole Froehle ’88, Minneapolis, Alnwick Spring 1984

What I remember the most about "studying abroad" ......

  • Fresh fish and chips with malt vinegar wrapped in a newspaper
  • The Pub life
  • Shandies (half ale and half lemonaid) -- (Unfortunately British lemonaid is much different than sprite, or real lemonaid)
  • Hitch hiking everywhere
  • Tiny cars and Lories
  • The hitch hiking family (Marv and Caroline) that adopted myself and Margie Posvahalla
  • Camping out without a tent on the Loch Ness eating beans out of the can and using warmed campfire stones to heat the sleeping bag
  • The supper crew
  • My birthday celebration at the castle
  • My Warkworth home stay parents (Wilf and Enid Carr) -- cricket matches with their cronies -- creamed sherry nightcaps
  • Hermitage ruins
  • Day trips to the North sea - hitch hiking or walking on the narrow windy hedge lined roads
  • roundabouts and streets with built in reflectors
  • Sunday mass in an ancient church with old world hyms
  • Anticipation of mail and care packages
  • Walks in the Duke's Park
  • The gate keepers
  • The class trip to Scotland - champaign in the park and harmony singing
  • Newcastle shopping trips
  • Unpredictable weather
  • Eurorail pass summer of 1984 - European whistle stop tour complete with heavy back pack and 'Fromer's Europe on $15 a day' guide book

Fun times!!!!!!
