Location

Akita City - set in the wooded mountains of northern Honshu, away from the dense crowds of larger Japanese cities, Akita's small town atmosphere is a great place to become immersed in the traditional Japanese culture. top

Academic Program

Students may enroll directly at Akita International, allowing them the freedom and flexibility to take any course provided that they meet all of the prerequisites. Courses focus on Japanese culture and language, global studies, and global relations. Students must maintain full-time status by taking 12-15 credit hours per semester. top

Living Accommodations

Students live in on-campus, university owned and operated dormitories. top

Selection

Students in good academic standing may apply. A G.P.A. of 2.5 is required at the time of application and departure. Students with strong self-motivation to learn Japanese culture will be encouraged to apply. Students will be interviewed by representatves from the SCSU East Asian Studies Committee. top

Program Costs and Financial Aid

Students will pay tuition at the home university. Other fees, including those for residence and food service, will be paid at the host university directly by the exchange student. Transportation and additional travel are the responsibilities of the student. top

* Applications are due the year before travel, i.e. traveling in Spring 2009? The application deadline is April 1st, 2008. Priority will be given to applications received by the deadline. Applications will be accepted after the deadline on a space available basis.

A pre-departure orientation meeting for the program will be conducted the semester preceding the program. top

 

Summer Intensive Japanese Language Program

 

Program Description
The Summer Intensive Japanese Language Program lasts for 6 weeks from late June to early August. Students will earn six credits while taking elementary Japanese courses. The average class size is 8 - 15 students. In addition to Japanese instructors, Japanese student tutors will be available to further assist students with their communication skills. In addition, to language courses, students will participate in:

  • Cultural workshops; i.e. calligraphy writing, a tea ceremony, and martial arts instruction
  • visits with local families through the weekend home visit program
  • field trips to local cultural sites such as Oga Peninsula and Kakunodate (an old Samurai town)

Costs
Students will pay program fees, airfare, books, and personal expenses. Tuition will be paid to SCSU.

Accommodations
Students will stay in campus residence halls with other international and Japanese students. Each two-person room has air-conditioning and share toilet and shower facilities with an adjoining two-person room. The residence hall also has common laundry and kitchen facilities.
