Advising Center

Administrative Director: Julie Bresnahan-Stark
Faculty Director: Steve Klepetar
E-mail: advising@stcloudstate.edu
Web site: www.stcloudstate.edu/advising

The advising center is located in Centennial Hall, 229 (320-308-6075), and is staffed by the directors and by six fulltime advisors and four faculty members, who advise one-quarter time. The advising center performs several functions:

  1. Orientation: Julie Bresnahan-Stark serves as director of orientation, and she plans and oversees both freshman and transfer student orientation sessions. Staff from the advising center work with both programs as well.
  2. Advisor Assignments: Julie Bresnahan-Stark assigns all incoming students to an advisor based on the indicated major. These assignments are sent to the student's current address, so students should make sure to report an updated and accurate local address to the Records Office (Administrative Services, 118) in order to ensure they receive all SCSU materials. If, for any reason, students do not receive their advisor assignment, they may call the advising center to get that information.
    1. Please Note: Students not admitted to a major (this requires meeting with a major advisor and filling out a major/minor form) need an access code to register. Students must meet with an advisor in order to get that code. The advising center will not give out access codes over the phone.
  3. Advising Undecided Students: All incoming students who are undecided and do not indicate a prospective major will be assigned to one of the advisors in the advising center. That advisor will work with those students until they are ready to move into a major area.
  4. Auditing General Education: The advising center will be happy to help any student with the general education program, including general education audits for students in the process of applying to a major.
  5. Freshman Advising and Registration Initiative: All first-semester freshmen will be served by the freshman advising and registration initiative during the fall semester as they register for the coming spring. The advising center staff will assist students as they use the online registration system for the first time.
