Refuse Disposal

The key word is recycle.

On Campus:

Recycling is encouraged. Receptacles for aluminum, trash and paper are provided across campus. Any paper without food contamination may be placed unsorted in appropriate containers. Confidential materials are destroyed on a regular basis. Provisions are also made to recycle many other materials, byproducts and waste on campus.

This voluntary system of recycling and trash reduction is dependent on your efforts and encouragement of others. Recycling saves the University disposal costs, reduces the need for new resources and improves the environment. Phone 308-2266 for information.

Off Campus:

Students who live in houses that rely on city trash pick-up must comply with the city volume-based refuse system, which requires residents to sort and recycle their refuse. Recycle bins will be provided by the city. All residents are required to recycle newspapers (including inserts) glass (jars and bottles), aluminum (cans, foil, pie tins),tin and steel (cans, metal lids), and plastic (bottles and jugs only). Residence owners pay a $4.50 per month refuse charge. For non-recyclable refuse the owner either will provide a certain number of city garbage pick-up bags (30-gallon or 25 lb.), or require that students purchase their own city bags ($2.00 each, available at convenience stores), or a combination of the two.

Students who live in houses utilizing private garbage collection service are encouraged to recycle their refuse at area recycle centers using the recycling guidelines above, but this is not a requirement.
