Scholarships Available
The following scholarships for sociology majors and minors are available
annually.
- Herbert Goodrich Scholarship. Two scholarships of $250
are awarded, one to a senior and one to a junior majoring in sociology.
To qualify, you must have completed at least 18 credits in sociology and
have a grade point average of at least 3.5 overall and 3.7 in sociology.
- H. P. Lohrman Scholarship. One scholarship of $250 is
awarded to a junior or senior sociology major, based primarily on academic
achievement.
- Arvid Hansen Scholarship. One scholarship of $500 will
go to a sociology or criminal justice major who demonstrates financial
need. To qualify, you must be a sociology or criminal justice major, be
in your junior or senior year, and have a GPA of at least 3.0. This award is rotated every year with the Criminal Justice Program
- Sociology Paper Award. One scholarship of $150 goes
to the sociology major or minor who submits the best sociological paper.
- Achievement Award. Applications are due in February.

How to Apply
Application forms and further information about scholarships are available
in Stewart Hall 262, beginning in about the middle of March each year. Application
forms for the Arvid Hansen Scholarship also are available in the Criminal
Justice Office in Stewart Hall 257. To be considered for a scholarship, you
must fill out an application form. The deadline for submitting applications
is usually in the second week of April. Scholarship winners are expected
to attend the annual awards banquet in May, but their meals are provided
free.
How to Contribute
Three of the sociology scholarships are funded by endowed accounts established
with the SCSU Foundation. These scholarships are funded by interest earned
on money in the endowed account. Two of the endowments were established by
former SCSU sociology professors Herbert Goodrich and H.P. Lohrman. The other
was established by Arvid Hansen, in appreciation for the high quality of
education that his daughter, Lynn Hansen Gottwaldt, received at SCSU. The
Sociology Paper Award is funded by annual contributions to the Sociology
account with the SCSU Foundation.
You may contribute to any of the sociology scholarship accounts. To do so,
just designate that account when making your contribution to the SCSU
