Registration Information
During the early registration period each semester, the Sociology program
maintains a petition system for allowing students into classes that fill
up early. Students fill out a petition form that gives information about
how close they are to graduation and why they need the course. The petition
form is available at the department office (Stewart Hall 262) or as a downloadable
file (below). At the end of the early registration, instructors use the
petitions to decide which students will be allowed to register. Only a
small number of students will be admitted into each section. A list of
admitted students is posted in the department office.
After early registration, students may still request permission from instructors
to be admitted to closed classes by contacting the instructor of the class
directly (by phone, e-mail, or in person). However, if some students were
admitted to the closed class through the early registration petition system,
it is unlikely that requests to enter the class after early registration
will be successful.
The Sociology Senior Project (SOC 477) is a permission-only, one-credit
course taken in conjunction with a 400-level course (except SOC 444, 480
or 488). The names of instructors from whom you may take SOC 477 appears
in the class schedule. A separate petition form is used for this class.
The form is available at the department office or as a downloadable file
(below). Students must complete the form and take it to the instructor
for approval. To maximize the likelihood that you will be admitted into
477, you should submit the petition form as soon as you register for the
400-level class.
