My primary areas of teaching interest are social psychology and sociological
practice. The courses I teach most frequently are Social Psychology, Principles
of Sociology, Sociological Practice, Self and Society, Sociology of Intimacy,
and Social Interaction. Currently, I am the Director of the Applied Sociology
program.
My recent scholarship has been mostly in the areas of sociological practice
and teaching sociology. For example, in 1997 I published an article on “Implementing
Study in Depth at St. Cloud State University” in Teaching Sociology,
and in 2002 I edited a special issue of Sociological Practice on
the topic of teaching sociological practice. I also am interested in evaluation
and assessment. With Linda Havir, I was an evaluator for the Initiative Foundation
from 1998 to 2002, and I am the current assessment coordinator for the sociology
program at SCSU.
I have served as President of Sociologists of Minnesota (2002-3), Membership
Chair of the Sociological Practice Association (1999-2005), Treasurer of
the Commission on Applied and Clinical Sociology (1998-present), Secretary-Treasurer
of the Section on Sociological Practice of the American Sociological Association
(1994-6), and Secretary of the St. Cloud NAACP (1987-98).
All of this has kept me pretty busy, but not too busy to enjoy my favorite
pastimes. In my spare time I especially like to attend Twins games, play pick-up
basketball, travel to exotic (at least compared to St. Cloud) places, and listen
to music.
