SOCIAL WORK MAJOR COURSES

 

SW 195   - Social Welfare and Democratic Citizenship (3 credits)

              Understanding democratic citizenship through social welfare as a concept;   state institutions, and areas for citizen engagement, locally, nationally and globally.

 

SW 216   - Introduction to Social Work (3 credits)

              Introduction to the social work profession.   Overview of fields of practice and an orientation to the knowledge, skills, and values involved in the practice of social work.

 

SW 330 - Human Behavior in the Social Environment   (3 credits)

              Human behavior from a social systems perspective.   Systemic model of family, groups, organizations, and communities as an integrated framework to assess problem situations.

 

SW 340 - Fundamentals of Generalist Practice (3 credits)

              Description of the profession; presentation of a generalist practice model integrated with volunteer experience in the community.  

 

SW 345 - Marginalized Populations (3 credits)

              Focus on marginalized populations within a diversity sensitive social work practice   model.  

 

SW 350 - Social Work Research Methods   (3 credits)

              Research methodologies for use in agency settings.   Quantitative and qualitative approaches, program and practice evaluation.   

 

SW 360 - Social Welfare Policy (3 credits)

              The social welfare institution and its policies; specific poverty issues are examined and critiqued.

 

SW 410 - Social Work Practice I   (3 credits)

              The generalist   model of social work practice with focus on work with individuals and families.  

 

SW 411 - Social Work Practice II   (3 credits)

              The generalist model of social work practice with focus on work with groups and families.  

 

SW 412 -Social Work Practice III   (3 credits)

              The generalist model of social work practice with particular focus on macro level practice.  

 

SW 443 - Pre-Field Practicum   (3 credits)

              Preparation of students for the required field placement.   Contact with and orientation to social agencies under the supervision of the instructor.  

 

SW 444 - Field Practicum (12 credits)

              Extensive educationally directed social work field placement in approved social agency.   Arranged with field instructor one semester prior to the actual placement.  

 

SW 445 - Field Practicum Seminar. (3 credits)

              Integration of knowledge from field practicum and classroom.   Ethics and values of the profession.   Culmination of Diversity/ Empowerment Portfolio project.
