The Social Work Degree

BSW - The bachelor’s program prepares social work majors for entry-level professional positions in the social welfare and human service delivery system, or entry into graduate school. The Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Committee first approved the Bachelor of Science in Social Work Degree (BSW) in 1973. The National Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredits the bachelor’s program. The program was last accredited in 2005. For further information please contact Gary Whitford, BSW Program Director at gswhitford@stcloudstate.edu or call (320) 308-4880.

MSW - The master's program prepares individuals as Advanced Generalist practitioners. This degree provides greater depth and breadth of theoretical knowledge, research, and practice to serve diverse populations of all sizes at the micro, mezzo, and macro level. Individuals entering the MSW program may enter either as Advanced Standing or Foundation. The Advanced Standing program is for persons holding a BSW degree awarded within the last 7 years. The Foundation track is for persons holding a bachelor's degree in other fields and meeting prerequisites in human biology, human life cycle development, and statistics. Only full time students are being admitted. Classes are offered Thursdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. - 9 p.m. Beginning the fall of 2007, the MSW program is currently in candidacy status with the National Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). For further information please contact Mary Pfohl, Ph.D., Interim MSW Program Director at mlpfohl@stcloudstate.edu or call (320) 308-3011.
