Academic Achievement Award
This
annual award honors a social work major who has exhibited
distinction in academics. Applicants must have an overall
GPA of 3.25 or better.
Students apply by writing an essay of no more than 300-500
words responding to the following:
- What is your current GPA?
- What have been the greatest challenges for you in the
course of obtaining your education?
- How do you see using your social work skills, knowledge,
and values throughout the next five years?
Applications also need to submit a letter of support for
their application written by a community human service practitioner
or non social work faculty member.
Activism for Social Justice Award
Applicants must have engaged in efforts to increase social
justice and practice social work values through activism.
Students apply by writing an essay of no more than 300-500
words responding to the following:
- The mission of the SCSU Department of Social Work asserts
that social workers must act to reduce barriers to social
and economic justice. How have you thus far implemented
this through your actions?
- How do you see using your social work skills, knowledge,
and values to continue working for justice throughout the
next five years?
Applications also need to submit a letter of support for
their application written by a community human service practitioner
or non social work faculty member.

Social Work Association
This organization strives to empower students and others
in achieving self-determination, while recognizing and supporting
community strengths. Members of this organization shall strive
to promote social justice and to be change agents willing
to take action.

Conferences and Events
Annual Social Work Day at the Capital
March 30 , 2009, St. Paul, MN. This is an opportunity
for social work students, practitioners and educators to be
heard as one voice for social change.
Annual Minnesota Student Social Work Conference
This is a unique conference planned by students
for students. It will offer informative presentations, stimulating
guest speakers, and lots of fun.
MSSA’s Annual Training Conference And Expo
March 25, 2009, Radisson Hotel South, Bloomington, MN.
More than 2,400 human service professionals gather for over
100 workshops and institutes, keynote presentations, 120+
exhibitors, and many networking opportunities.
Contact a member of the social work association or a faculty
member if you are interested in attending any of these March
events.
Annual Minnesota Student Social Work Conference - Student
Presentations
Social work students are encouraged to submit abstracts in
order to present at the conference (see above). Presentations
may take the form of a paper, panel, or poster. An abstract
of 500 words is required as a part of the application. Contact Professor Whitford
in Stewart Hall 236 for application forms.
