At A Glance

Established in 1869, St. Cloud State University has grown into the largest campus in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system and the second-largest university in the state of Minnesota.

TYPE OF COLLEGE: A four-year, public, residential, liberal arts and sciences university with 47 academic departments

LOCATION: A 100-acre campus in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on the Mississippi River, about an hour from Minneapolis and St. Paul

POPULATION: St. Cloud, which has more than 60,000 residents, is the core city of a three-county Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of 183,000

STUDENTS:  Fall 2009 enrollment of 17,686, including  1,905 graduate students

ACADEMICS: More than 200 majors, minors and pre-professional programs; more than 50 graduate programs, including an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration

CALENDAR:  Two 15-week semesters and a summer session that offers more than 900 courses and enrolls nearly 6,000 students

FACULTY:  91 percent of classes are taught by professors; 76 percent hold the highest degree in their field

STUDENT/FACULTY RATIO:  19:1

RESIDENTIAL LIFE:  3,100 students are housed in nine residential communities

ACTIVITIES:  Nearly 250 clubs and organizations

ATHLETICS:  Nine men’s teams and 10 women’s teams compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference; the Division I women’s and men’s hockey teams compete in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association; club sports include rugby, crew, lacrosse, cycling and more

RECREATION:  Offerings include fitness, aquatics, intramurals, rock climbing, outdoor activities and a challenge course; facilities include two pools, two gymnasiums, 200-meter track, year-round turf field, two ice sheets, bowling alley, dance studio, ball diamonds and a student recreation center

COST FOR 2009-10:  In-state tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board is $13,546

FINANCIAL AID:  Students receive more than $100 million in scholarships, grants, loans and student work opportunities each year

Receive a Global Education

A global education at St. Cloud State University means acquiring the skills and knowledge to maneuver successfully in the 21st Century. That’s why we offer study abroad opportunities in about 20 countries. If you want to provide dental examinations for children in Guatemala, we’ll help you make that happen. If you want to study British culture at the Alnwick Castle in England, where the Harry Potter movies were filmed, we can get you there, too.

Justin Wetzel“If there’s a club or organization that you’re interested in, and it doesn’t exist, you can start it at St. Cloud State. I started the pre-dental club here and we went to Guatemala. We administered fluoride treatments, did checkups, and scheduled appointments for children and their parents to see the dentist we were working with. We even built a house while we were down there. We have more access to do things like starting a club because we’re a small enough college. St. Cloud State is so condensed. If you need to talk to somebody, you can. You don’t have to take a car trip to see them.”
