Dr. Robert O. Bixby Memorial Scholarship
This memorial scholarship fund is established to recognize the significant contributions of Dr. Robert O. Bixby (1947 – 2003) in establishing and developing the Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) Program at St. Cloud State University (SCSU). The SCSU GIS Club, a student organization that was initiated, advised and constantly encouraged by Dr. Bixby, establishes this fund in his memory. The GIS Club welcomes contributions from SCSU alumni, professional colleagues and friends of Dr. Bixby.
Dr. Bixby earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1985. He was a geography professor and director of the Spatial Analysis Research Center at St. Cloud State University. During his career at SCSU, he helped establish the surveying program, and served as faculty advisor to the GIS Club and the Veterans Club. He served in the U.S. Military during the Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star. In the late 1970s, he worked as an administrative assistant to the Mayor of St. Cloud. He also served as consultant to the South Two Rivers Watershed District, the City of Rockville and Holdingford Township. He served on the Governor's GIS Council and the Regional Development Commissions in Staples and St. Cloud.
In addition to these and other achievements, Dr. Bixby constantly encouraged his students to achieve their full potential. He loved to relay stories to illustrate his encouragement. A great many alumni of SCSU can trace their current success to
the inspiration they received from Dr. Bixby.
