Frequently Asked Questions for the New Coborn Plaza Apartments
1) Will there be a meal plan option for students living there? Residential students of the new
apartments are eligible to select any of the residential meal plans. A 4th meal plan designed
specifically for our campus apartment students is also available. However,
upper‐division students are not required to carry a residential meal plan.
2) Will parking costs be included in the fee for the new facility or will there be an additional
cost? Parking garage fees are separate from the room fees. The proposed fee for the
heated and secure parking garages is approximately $300 per semester.
3) What is the cost for these apartments? The proposed fee for a standard a 4 bedroom unit will
be $3480 per semester on an academic year agreement which includes all utilities and furnishings. 12 month agreements are also available.
Academic year agreements begin on August 1 and go though May 31. Twelve month agreements begin August 1-July 31.
4) What appliances/furnishings will be provided within these apartments? All appliances
including a stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and a washer and
dryer will be in each unit. Additionally, a full size bed, desk, desk chair, three drawer dresser will be in each bedroom. Living rooms will have a sofa/love seat and two chairs along with a coffee table and end
table in each four bedroom unit. Two bedroom and single/studio units will vary. Additionally,
each kitchen island also comes with two or four stools, depending upon the unit.
5) How many parking spots will be available? Over 300 spaces will be available for residents of
the facility.
6) Will cable and internet will be available? Current plans offer wireless and data port internet and network services for all units. Expanded basic cable television service to all units, including bedrooms. These services are included in the fee.
7) What is the height of the ceilings? Ceiling height is 10 ft?
8) Will these apartments have balconies? No, these apartments do not have balconies.
9) Will every student living in the new apartments have a single bedroom no matter what type of
apartment they choose? Yes, every student will have a private, single bedroom and private
bathroom regardless of the type of unit.
10) Will there be a bus stop or campus shuttle spot bringing people to and from the campus?
Metro Bus Service has a University line currently providing service along 5th Avenue, which
would provide service to the new apartment complex. For more details on this bus route, visit

11) Will laundry be unlimited in each of the apartments? Yes, a washer and dryer are provided in
each unit as a part of the standard appliances.
12) Will Financial Aid help to cover the cost of this type of housing if I qualify since they are still
associated with on‐campus housing? Students should confer with the Financial Aid
advisor regarding specific questions about their aid package. But in general, if a student
receives some form of aid, this can be applied to the student’s account. Residential Life will
bill individual student accounts for all fees associated with the new apartments, including
parking fees.
13) How will the payments be made? Can I still do the installment plan or do I have to come up
with the monthly payment? Payments can be made to your student account through Student
Services. Students are eligible to participate in the University installment plan as defined by
Business Services Offices. Additional fees apply for the installment plan.
14) What specific utilities will be included in the cost of the apartment? The utilities included in the
fee are: heat, water, sewer, electricity, refuse and recycling services, Internet/network services, and
cable TV service. There are no deposits needed.
15) Will telephone services be provided? No. Students are responsible for negotiating their own
telephone provider. Each unit will be wired with appropriate phone jacks if students choose to
contract for telephone service.
16) What will be the length of the agreement? We will be offering an academic year agreement and a 12
month agreement available for this facility. We will also offer a summer month agreement for the months
of June and July as well. See the contract language for more details.
17) Can the occupants in each apartment be co‐ed? Unless otherwise noted through enrollment in
a special residential community, all apartment units will be single gender at the time the first
occupants sign a lease.
18) Will University policy still apply to these apartments, even though they are off campus? All
University and Residential Life policies will apply for this apartment complex. Additionally,
there will be specific policies for these apartments. Please consult the apartment lease and the University student handbook
for more information..
19) What will be the requirement to live there? Students must have at least 30 earned credits
and/or at least two semesters of on‐campus living prior to occupancy, unless otherwise
approved by the Director of Residential Life or designee. For the 2011-12 academic year, a limited
number of spots were held open for First Year students.
20) Will there be a damage deposit to live there and what will it be? There will be no specific
damage deposit required. However, all students completing a lease will be required to make a
$200 prepayment by the required deadline. New students to campus housing will also be
required to complete a onetime non‐refundable $50 application fee at the time application.
The pre payment is applied towards your first semester payment.
21) Can I request my roommates in this new facility or will I automatically be assigned a
roommate? Students may request roommates within an apartment. Please note that if there
are vacancies within an apartment, the Department of Residential Life will assign students to
these vacancies to make the most effective use of the space available. Residents may also be
subjected to consolidation if occupancy in a unit were to drop below 50% of capacity. Please
consult the contract language for more details.
22) What are the different apartment options available in this new building? This facility will offer
102 four bedroom units, 18 two bedroom units, 3 one bedroom units and 6 studio apartments.
23) Will I have any room keys? No, there will be keyless/fob technology. Each resident will be
issued an entrance fob and individual unit fob that is coded for your bedroom door, etc...
24) What size will the mattress and beds be in this new facility? All beds will have full sized
mattresses in each bedroom. These mattresses are slightly larger than a twin bed, which is our
common bed type in the residence halls.
25) What furnishings will NOT be provided? Televisions, telephones, lamps, bedding and other
linens, cooking utensils, dishes, pots/pans, and all personal care items will not be provided.
26) Will there be Residential Life staff on the premises? Yes, there will be a full‐time professional
Hall Director, Graduate Assistant Hall Director and five Apartment Community Advisors living on‐site within
this complex.
27) What type of flooring will be in each unit? Each bedroom and most of the living space will be
carpeted. The kitchen and all bathrooms will have linoleum.
28) Are pets allowed? No pets are allowed in student rooms, although students may have fish in
approved containers/aquariums no larger than 10 gallons.
29) Is this facilty open during breaks? Yes, this facility will be open over breaks. Sherburne, Hill Hall, Shoemaker Hall, Benton, Stateview and Lawrence will also be open during breaks for 2011-12. All other halls will be closed during break periods.
