Students may request advance payment if there has been at least 56 days since their last payment or if this is their initial application for the GI Bill. It amounts to the first partial month of school and the second full month paid at the beginning of the semester. Since GI Bill payments are paid in the month following the month of school completed, the next payment after the advance would come in the 4th month of school.

The advance payment request is honored if:

1. the student is attending school at least 1/2 time, and
2. the signed request form is given to the school certifying official at least 45 days prior to the first day of school.

The advance payment is delivered to the school certifying official, who then gives it to the student after verifying the enrollment is 1/2 time or better.
