Scientific Discovery Program

Program Information

Purpose

This is a special program for high ability, high potential 9th and 10th grade students who demonstrate a strong interest in science and/or mathematics. Students of color and female students are encouraged to apply.

Program Activities

Participants will experience biological, chemical, computer sciences, mathematical, social and statistical sciences through laboratories, special demonstrations, presentations, field trips and lectures related to water quality and solid waste management. Participants will use the knowledge and skills they develop to conduct research on topics that have social and environmental significance in their communities. University and practicing scientists will work closely with the student in identifying, designing, developing and implementing the research project.

Eligibility

Students currently in 9th and 10th grade.All eligible students are encouraged to apply.

  1. Priority given to members of groups underrepresented in science fields 
  2. Willingness to learn and cooperate
  3. Students in 9th and 10th grades as of September 2016
  4. The program will seek ethnic, gender, regional, and social diversity among participants.

  6. Teacher Recommendation
Please note that not all applicants may be accepted because of a limited number of positions.

Cost

All students applying to this program must pay a $10.00 non-refundable application fee. All expenses related to tuition, academic fees, books and campus room and board will be provided. However, normal out-of-pocket living expenses for notebooks, calculators, snacks, laundry, recreation and other incidents should be anticipated. Limited financial aid to cover these living expenses is available to students in need. Students accepted to this program are fully subsidized by the program's sponsors and some students may qualify for Minnesota summer scholarships as well.

A copy of tax return (From 1040 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return 2016 or 2017), which shows the adjusted gross income figure, must be submitted for income verification. Some students may qualify for Minnesota summer scholarships. If the applicant qualifies for Free/Reduced Lunch, they can submit the documentation verifying eligibility in lieu of the tax return. International students may be charged up to but not more than $1,000. The actual cost per student for this program is $4,000.00.
