Women in Philosophy Endowed Scholarship Fund

An account has been created with the SCSU Foundation to collect the $10,000.00 necessary for an endowed scholarship fund for women students who major or minor in philosophy. It may take as long as 2009 for us to reach this financial goal, but with additional contributions we can make it happen sooner. Once $10,000.00 is accumulated we will be able to offer an annual $500.00 scholarship.

Individuals interested in making tax-deductible donations to this fund should contact the SCSU Foundation at 320-308-3177 or foundation@stcloudstate.edu.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. The student must be enrolled at the time of application in one of the major or minor programs offered by the SCSU Philosophy Department.
  2. The student must have a 3.0 GPA at the time of application.
  3. The student must be female.
  4. Among candidates meeting criteria a-c, the scholarship should be awarded on the basis of philosophical ability and involvement in the philosophical activities of the department.

Reapplication:

Those who receive the scholarship are eligible to reapply as long as the scholarship can be used to pay tuition as an undergraduate at SCSU.

The initiating contributor is Dr. Kathleen Gill. Dr. Gill, who began teaching at SCSU in 1987, was the first woman hired into the SCSU philosophy department as a tenure-track faculty member. Establishing this scholarship fund is motivated in part by her sense of responsibility for increasing the participation of women in philosophy on this campus. And it is a reflection of her belief in the value of philosophy in the lives of undergraduates, and the value of women's involvement in the creation of philosophical thought.

Drew Roser Memorial Scholarship

Drew Roser was a student at St. Cloud State University during the early 1990’s. An intellectually extraordinary student, Drew had a triple major in history, philosophy and English. Just a few years after graduating, however, Drew discovered he had cancer. During his illness, he worked with the SCSU Foundation to create a scholarship fund. It is now an endowed memorial fund, making scholarships of at least $750.00 available to students on an annual basis.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. The student must be a junior or senior with a declared double major in two of the following departments: English, history or philosophy.
  2. The student must have a cumulative SCSU grade point average of at least 3.5.
  3. Applicants must submit an essay about the values they hold and something of their philosophy of life, and are to include how their chosen fields of major study are relevant to their values. These essays will be used by the selection committee to evaluate the applicants’ commitment to personal integrity and respect for others, and in what manner they have had a positive influence on the lives of others. The essay should be typed, a minimum of three pages, and submitted with an application form.
