Office 365

Common Questions

What is Office 365?

Microsoft Office 365 is a suite of Cloud-hosted tools, allowing users to access a variety of software from any device as long as an internet connection is available. There are no installations, no updates, and nothing required from the user other than logging in to the service.

Included Applications

  • Microsoft Office Online - Lite versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will be accessible anywhere with an internet connection. Mobile apps will also be provided to allow users to access the software from their mobile devices, such as phones or tablets.
  • OneDrive for Business - Serves as an online storage service for pictures, videos, and word documents. OneDrive provides all faculty and staff with 1TB of storage in the Cloud. Functionality and support of the service will continue to grow as time goes on. OneDrive will not replace Filespace or any other current service provided by ITS.
  • Yammer - A social media site for our campus (similar to Facebook); ideal for classes, student groups, administrative units, research projects, learning communities, and anyone needing a social space. It is maintained by our campus and helps us communicate with each other while maintaining adherence to HIPAA/FERPA policies.
  • Skype for Business - With the ability to share documents instantly, Skype for Business is a great instant messaging client available to users for free. Skype for Business is available on most operating systems and mobile devices.
  • Desktop Office Suite - Users will be able to download full versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, and more to their computer at no cost.

How will this impact my work?

Once we have been converted, you will have access to the new apps, features and collaboration capabilities offered in Office 365. The same tools you use today, such as Microsoft’s Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available online through the Cloud. If preferred, you can still use the desktop equivalents – just make sure to have the latest updates installed.

Some noticeable changes:

  • Access - Files can be accessed wherever internet is available. OneDrive serves as a central hub for all your information. With internet access, it is possible to download files onto your device for offline use.
  • Collaboration - Tools such as Yammer and OneDrive can be used to edit documents, share information with peers, and openly collaborate in real time. All the tools bundled with Office 365 are designed to work seamlessly with one another for unprecedented ease of use.
  • Productivity - New timesaving features in your SCSU email makes replying to emails, scheduling dates and managing attachments easier than ever before so you can focus on what's important. Skype for Business provides options for checking recipient's availability and allows you to send instant messages on the fly or directly call your colleague.
  • Storage - Office 365 offers 50GB of storage for email and 1TB of storage through OneDrive. You can store word documents, presentations, pictures, and more with OneDrive.
  • Security - Built-in compliance with HIPAA/FERPA, with around-the-clock protection for files in the cloud.
