Who must take licensure examinations?

All applicants for a first time Minnesota teaching license must complete the required teacher licensure examinations in: 1) basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics (Praxis I / PPST); 2) professional knowledge (Praxis II / Principles of Learning and Teaching [PLT]; and 3) content/subject matter (Praxis II / Subject Assessments and Specialty Area Tests)

All applicants adding a licensure field will be required to complete the content/subject matter test adopted for the field to be added.

Note: School administrators, school counselors, school social workers, school nurses, school psychologists, and educational speech-language pathologist are not teachers, and therefore are not subject to teacher examination licensure requirements.
REGISTRATION
The following information is supplemental to the 2007-2008 Praxis Registration Bulletin. This information is subject to revision and changes. Additional registration information (registration procedures, forms, score information, as well as testing locations) is included in the Praxis Registration Bulletin which is available online at the Educational Testing Services (ETS) web site(www.ets.org). Information may also be obtained from Office of Clinical Experiences(EB-B120). (Please note that pedagogy and subject matter/content tests have specific test sessions.) Computer based testing is not available for the Praxis II tests.

Praxis II score reports will be mailed approximately four weeks after the test date. The Praxis scores you receive are maintained by ETS for ten years and are portable to other states using the Praxis Series. For MN testing sites please refer to the Test Center List on The Praxis Series web site (www.ets.org) .
How can I prepare for the tests?
ETS publishes Tests at a Glance booklets for each Praxis subject area. These booklets contain material regarding: what is covered on each test, how to prepare for the test, test-taking strategies, and more. You can review and download Test at a Glance booklets online at www.ets.org . Another ETS publication, General Information and Study Tips , is available. You can order General Information and Study Tips , as well as Study Guides for select Subject Area Tests by calling 1-800-537-3161, from the ETS Online Store at www.ets.org , or by mailing in the form at the back of the Registration Bulletin or Test at a Glance booklet.
PEDAGOGY EXAMINATIONS (Principles of Learning and Teaching [PLT])
On or after September 1, 2001 each first-time Minnesota classroom teacher licensure must successfully complete one of the following examinations. Choose one test that is within the scope of your license (e.g. a person with a 5-12 licensure program may choose either the 5-9 or 7-12 PLT test option, or a person with a K-12 licensure may choose any one of PLT K-6, 5-9 or 7-12 test options). (Note: New PLT: Early Childhood is for early childhood licensure only.). Effective September 1, 2002, testing and passing score requirements are enforced as indicated.
Effective October 1, 2006 applicants for the first license in Early Childhood must take one of the Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching tests, either the PLT: K-6 test number 0522 or they may select the new PLT: Early Childhood test number 0521. The minimum qualifying score is 164 for the newly adopted PLT: Early Childhood licensure test.

SUBJECT MATTER/CONTENT EXAMINATIONS
On or after September 1, 2001, first time applications for the following licensure fields, whether as first time Minnesota licensees or to add the field(s)to existing Minnesota teacher licensure, must successfully complete the following examinations. Effective September 1, 2002, testing and passing score requirements are enforced as indicated.

Effective October 1, 2004 new licensure tests for all science fields 9-12 (Biology/Life, Chemistry, Earth, Physics) and middle level specialties for grades 5-8 (Communication Arts & Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, World Languages K-8) are required.

*Additional Tests -- Effective Oct. 1, 2004 , candidates for a K-6 plus 5-8 specialty must also take a middle level specialty test for grades 5-8. Candidates who selected the World Languages: Spanish K-8 specialty must also take the subject area specialty test (see below for specialty field test information.)
