News media leader
Vteran newspaper man and news media leader, Pete Mohs '83.
Pete Mohs '83 jump-started his journalism career at age 16. Now he is president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association (MNA).
As a sophomore, Mohs became a sports writer for the St. Cloud Apollo High School newspaper so he could be involved with athletics.
That same school year he was hired part-time by the St. Cloud Times. Mohs worked at the Central Minnesota daily through high school and into his university years at St. Cloud State.
“St. Cloud State helped me prepare for a career in journalism because of the diverse experience from classes that focused on newspaper, television and radio production,” Mohs said. “All those skills were valuable to my career over the past 30 years. It was also helpful to have done some writing for the SCSU Chronicle campus newspaper.”
With his mass communications degree in hand, Mohs landed a job at the Brainerd Dispatch, where he covered the 1987 and 1991 World Series wins by the Minnesota Twins.
Since 2004, Mohs has been publisher of the Echo Journal, a non-daily which serves parts of Crow Wing and Cass counties, in north central Minnesota.
Experience and commitment helped Mohs get elected the 134th president of MNA in January 2014
“I believe in the value of community newspapers as they document the history of each town - from sports coverage to school activities to city council meeting coverage to photos of events,” Mohs said.
