David Novak '00
Weather forecaster

Meteorology alumnus David Novak ’00 is one of the National Weather's Service's leading forecasters.

Novak directs the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. Novak and his nearly 50-member staff do forecast precipitation, interpret weather-prediction models and issue storm summaries.

A 2008 St. Cloud State alumni award honoree, Novak holds a master’s degree from State University New York (SUNY) Albany and a doctorate from SUNY Stony Brook.

The Weather Prediction Center (NWS) is one of nine National Weather Service centers, including the National Hurricane Center and the Climate Prediction Center.

While attending St. Cloud State, Novak joined the National Weather Service in 1999 as a summer intern. He worked as a fire-weather technician in Fairbanks, Alaska, and as a meteorologist intern in Duluth.

In 2002, he joined the Scientific Services Division of NWS' Eastern Region Headquarters. In 2012, he became the Weather Prediction Center's chief of development and training.
