Learning on the job

Ashli Gerdes, mass communications student from St. Cloud, is learning on the job and in the classroom.

A locked door launched Ashli Gerdes’ radio broadcasting career.

"I didn’t ever expect to do radio," said Gerdes, a senior majoring in mass communications.

A locked door at a campus media outlet prompted Gerdes to wander into the studios of KVSC 88.1 FM, where she met Ryan Connelly '10, the station's production director. Three weeks later she was on the air at St. Cloud State's student-run, independent public radio station.

"I absolutely fell in love with it," said Gerdes, who hails from St. Cloud.

Gerdes has since written columns for University Chronicle, anchored newscasts and served as website director for UTVS, worked as program director for KVSC, and interned at KMXK Mix 94.9.

Those experiences led to her job as reporter, anchor and on-air personality for Townsquare Media stations in St. Cloud, including WJON, Mix 94.9 and 103.7 The Loon.

Gerdes also is an online content specialist, anchor and reporter for sister station 1240 WJON in St. Cloud.

"She covers community event-type stories, stories we wouldn’t have been able to cover in the past," said Jim Maurice, her news director.

Said Gerdes: "Radio helps people get their messages out. We make people aware of what’s going on in the community."

"I help people find their passion in a way, by making them aware. Kind of the same way I found my passion."
