The Husky Fried Ride, a Metro Bus fueled by waste cooking oil, received the 2008-09 Innovative Partnering and Collaboration Award from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The award recognized the project for its sustainability, the benefits it provides to all partners and its impact on students.
The environmentally-friendly vehicle runs on a fuel mixture of 70 percent vegetable oil-- taken from Sodexo foodservice venues at St. Cloud State-- and 30 percent diesel fuel. The Husky Fried Ride, Metro Bus #701, operates on Husky Shuttle park-and-ride routes and on four Campus Clipper routes.
Annual ridership on the bus, which travels about 15,000 miles a year, is estimated to be 120,000 students, faculty members and staff.
