A commitment to educating the next generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians prompted Medtronic, Minneapolis, to donate a fully-equipped 53-foot trailer that St. Cloud State will outfit as a mobile science lab that will make one-week visits to Central Minnesota K-12 schools beginning in the fall.
Science equipment and experiments offered by the mobile lab may increase participation in the sciences, considered essential to maintaining Minnesota’s global competitiveness. The mobile science lab is intended to enhance the science curriculum of schools that don’t have the equipment, infrastructure or staff to provide such training or keep up with curriculum changes. The trailer will have laboratory and meeting space bump-outs, as well as a fully integrated audio/video system with VHS/DVD, wireless network, satellite Internet and two 42-inch plasma television screens.
St. Cloud State partnered with St. Cloud Technical College, Ridgewater College and Minneapolis Community and Technical College for a seed grant of $200,000 from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Bioscience Initiative. The project will be sustained through public grants and private donations. Plans are to raise $200,000.
