With the help of volunteers, Outdoor Endeavors at St. Cloud State University again this spring conducted a Mississippi River Cleanup. The annual spring and fall cleanups have removed 500-1,500 pounds of garbage from the riverbank, including steel, bottles, cans, building supplies and household trash. Volunteer participation in the effort has grown exponentially, from 12 volunteers in 2005 to more than 80, making it one of the largest river cleanup events in Minnesota.
Since 2005, Outdoor Endeavors has worked with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Adopt A River Program in maintaining the river along the campus. Additionally, the event is registered nationally as part of National River Clean Up Week organized by American Rivers, which promotes efforts to have clean waterways.
