From St. Cloud to Silicon Valley

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Joel Goergen ‘86, Maple Grove, Minn., has created for St. Cloud State students a direct connection to Silicon Valley. Without the partnership he formed with the University, according to one graduate now working with Goergen in San Jose, Calif., “Making it to Silicon Valley may not have been an option.”

Goergen, who earned St. Cloud State degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering, is now vice president of technology and chief scientist for Force10 Networks, an innovator in highperformance networking systems. The Silicon Valley company, which has more than 550 employees and offices and support centers around the globe, augments its staff by reaching out to St. Cloud State for talent.

Force10 (www.force10networks.com/company) currently has five SCSU students working part time – remotely – for the company.

In addition, every summer Force10 brings on a St. Cloud State student as an intern. Beth Donnay was the 2007 intern– she has since graduated and is now a full-time research scientist/ engineer at Force10 headquarters in the Silicon Valley, an opportunity she doesn’t believe would have been hers without the partnership Goergen maintains.
