Professor of Music Richard K. Hansen has been named the first recipient of the Bruce and Dee Pearson Tradition of Excellence Music Faculty Professional Development Award in recognition of excellence in music education, performance and scholarship. The award and the $3,000 stipend it carries were presented to the longtime faculty member Nov. 11.
Hansen, director of bands and professor of musicology and conducting at St. Cloud State, is author of the first comprehensive history of the wind band, “The American Wind Band: A Cultural History.” International recognition has included guest conducting in Norway, Denmark, Mexico and Japan, where he conducted the Musashino Academy Wind Ensemble, one of the world’s leading wind ensembles.
The award was established by alumni Bruce '64 and Dee ’63 Pearson, Elk River. Bruce is an internationally known author, composer, clinician and conductor who is best known as the author of the “Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method” and co-author of the “Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble Method,” music series texts used worldwide. He has been honored as “Most Outstanding in the Field of Music” by the state of Minnesota, received the Midwest Clinic Medal of Honor, and received from St. Cloud State a Distinguished Service to Music Award and the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award.
