Every summer, SCSU hosts USA Hockey’s Select 15 and Select 17 Player Development Camps, which bring the nation’s best 15- and 17-year-old hockey players to practice and compete at the National Hockey Center. Each event - this summer there were three - attracts 100 to 200 hockey scouts who evaluate the players for professional, college and junior league teams.
Practices and competitions are always free and open to the public, giving the entire community a chance to “scout.” In addition to 720 young hockey players, the three camps this summer brought to campus 360 coaches and other staff, as many as 600 scouts, hundreds of parents who flew to Minnesota to watch their teens play, and hundreds of television, magazine and newspaper reporters.
The hockey players and staff were housed in SCSU residential halls and had their meals in the student dining hall. SCSU also made hotel arrangements for scouts, the media and families during their stay, with an approximate total of 1,800 rooms rented during the three camps.
