Art fair and concert today
Thursday, June 26, 2008
A cappella group Tonic Sol-fa and gospel vocalist Robert Robinson will perform at the June 26 Lemonade Concert & Art Fair. And, the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra (SCSO) will premiere "Ginny's Serenade" in tribute to a founding fair organizer.
The art, crafts and entertainment extravaganza runs 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on campus grounds surrounding Atwood Memorial Center. The fair is the opening event of St. Cloud’s Granite City Days.
St. Cloud State University's signature summer event will host the premiere of "Ginny's Serenade," written in tribute to Ginny Tennant, a founding organizer of the 35-year-old Lemonade Concert & Art Fair. SCSO will perform the piece, which was commissioned by Sandy Nadeau and about 20 of Tennant's friends. Directing the 8 p.m. performance on the Atwood Mall will be Daniel O'Bryant, assistant professor of music and St. Cloud State's director of orchestras. Nadeau is executive director of SCSO.
The composer of "Ginny's Serenade," Michael Halstenson, conducts two performing groups based in Anoka, Minn.: the Northern Symphony Orchestra and the Lake Wobegon® Brass Band. He teaches at Anoka High School, where he directs the orchestra and theater programs.
Tonic Sol-fa is a Minnesota-based group reknowned for staging powerful performances with four voices and a tambourine. The group’s television credits include a TODAY Show appearance on NBC and a public television Christmas special.
Robert Robinson is an award-winning gospel singer who has worked with artists such as Aretha Franklin, Prince, Andrae Crouch, Barry Manilow and Lorie Line. He also is executive director and artistic director of the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir.
String musician Paul Imholte will provide strolling music on fiddle, guitar, dulcimer and more. The St. Cloud resident has released six recordings, including "The First Noel," a CD of Christmas songs on the hammered dulcimer.
The 35th annual Lemonade Concert & Art Fair is produced by the students and staff of University Program Board.
