College of Education leader named

After serving as interim dean for nearly a year, Kate Steffens has been named dean of the SCSU College of Education. She has served the University as associate dean of the college, as director of assessment and accreditation and as associate vice president for academic affairs on an interim basis.

Kate SteffensSteffens also led the team responsible for the successful effort to have the College of Education reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), when SCSU was the first school in the nation to complete new NCATE standards. A nationally recognized leader in assessment and accreditation, Steffens has served for three years as chair of the NCATE board of examiners and is an examiner for the Minnesota Board of Teaching. This year, she was named one of the top 100 alumni of the University of Minnesota College of Education.

Steffens earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Minnesota, where she also earned her doctorate in educational psychology.

The SCSU College of Education is the 12th largest producer of educators in the nation.
