A semester-long interdisciplinary series at St. Cloud State University is exploring the experiences of Sephardic Jews – Jews exiled from Spain in 1492 –  through films, concerts, interactive media, presentations, and personal stories from Sephardic members of the St. Cloud community and beyond.

“Sephardim, the Jews of Spain: 1492 and Beyond” represents the collaborative efforts of a wide range of St. Cloud State programs, departments and other St. Cloud State University entities who collectively support exploration and celebration of the little-known Sephardic people.

“Through events such as this, we hope to deepen our understanding of and appreciation for human diversity,” said event co-organizer Lisa Splittgerber, Spanish department chairwoman and professor.

The series kicked off Sept. 10 with the showing of the film “Shadow of the Acropolis” and a discussion led by Laura Zelle, director of Tolerance Minnesota and Mary Calof, a hidden child Holocaust survivor.

An inauguration event will take place on Sept. 16 at the Welcome Center featuring food from Greek Cravings, interactive exhibits, films, music and presentations from St. Cloud State President Earl H. Potter III and Provost Devinder Malhotra.

Other key speakers and presenters throughout the series include: Vivian Mann, visiting presenter from the Jewish Theological Seminary, presenting on “Traditionalism in Sephardic Art;” musical performances by Voices of the Sepharad; and a showing of the film “Jubanos: The Jews of Cuba” with a discussion with filmmaker Milos Silber.
