Brown earns thesis award

Angela M. Brown '12 is the 2012 winner of the Distinguished Master's Thesis Award.

The Crystal resident and Marshalltown, Iowa, native earns $200 and a certificate for her thesis "Queer Youth Community Organizing: Intents and Outcomes of Youth Mobilization in LGBTQ Service Programs."

LQBTQ is an acronym used to describe lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning communities.

Brown's 150-page thesis will be submitted to the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) distinguished thesis competition.

The Distinguished Master's Thesis Award is sponsored annually by the School of Graduate Studies. The Faculty Association Graduate Committee reviews theses nominated by departments and then selects one project based on originality, methodological soundness and potential contribution to the body of knowledge on a topic.

Brown works through Mayor Chris Coleman's office as the St. Paul AmeriCorps VISTA program leader. She hopes to earn a doctorate and then teach higher education courses focused on LQBTQ communities, issues of equity, and advancing human rights.

Brown earned her master's in social responsibility in August.
