Glen Tuomaala, director of two bands at St. Cloud State, is the 2012-13 recipient of the Bruce and Dee Pearson Faculty Excellence Award.

The annual award recognizes outstanding contributions to music education at St. Cloud State.

"The Department of Music thanks Glen for his tireless efforts in establishing the Husky Sports Band and Dixieland Band, and most recently as conductor of the university Campus Band," said Terry Vermillion, department chair.

Glen Tuomaala earned bachelor's degrees in horn performance and music education from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. He holds a master's degree in music education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

An advocate for arts education, Tuomaala has taught in private and public K-12 school systems. He received national recognition in 1999 with a Melody Grant Award from the California-based Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. Tuomaala is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, Kappa Kappa Psi (Beta Kappa), Phi Mu Alpha (Iota Omicron) and an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota (Theta Eta).

Tuomaala has written reviews of new music literature and was a regular columnist for "Band & Orchestra News" and "School Band and Orchestra." He has earned invitations to lecture on new music technology at the University of Dayton and the University of Delaware. He has served at St. Cloud State since 2005.

Bruce Pearson is a world-renowned music educator, author, composer and clinician. He is the author of the "Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method." Pearson is 1964 graduate of St. Cloud State and a Music Department donor. He also is the recipient of an honorary doctorate and the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award.
