Team members at the regional cyber defense competition.

A St. Cloud State student team was among 10 teams competing in the 7th National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC) April 20-22 in San Antonio, Texas.

University of Washington claimed the national championship. Also competing were California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, Rochester Institute of Technology, Texas A&M University, Towson University, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, United States Air Force Academy, University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of Wyoming.

St. Cloud State's team included Eric Kluthe, Ryan McDougall, Joshua Platz, Matthew Sitko, Martin Smith, Derek Winters, Jake Soenneker and Taylor Swanson. Team advisor is Tirthankar Ghosh, associate professor of computer science and information technology.

St. Cloud State earned its national berth after winning the state competition in Alexandria and the Midwest Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in Palos Hills, Ill.

The NCCDC pitted teams of full-time college students against each other in an environment where cyber security skills are pushed to the limit. Teams were scored on their ability to operate and maintain a business network while under hostile cyber attack. The teams inherited an operational network from a fictional business, complete with e-mail, websites, data files and users.

Each team was required to correct problems on their network, perform typical business tasks, and defend their networks from a red team that generated live, hostile activity throughout the competition. The teams were scored on their performance in those three areas and the team with the highest score at the end of the competition was crowned the 2012 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Champion.

The University of Texas at San Antonio's Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security hosted the event with funding and support from organizations such as Deloitte, Department of Homeland Security,Facebook, McAfee, Microsoft and Boeing.
