St. Cloud State University’s Fall Education Abroad Fair is 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sept. 14 in Atwood Memorial Center Main Lounge.

Featuring study abroad programs in a variety of countries, it will give students an opportunity to learn about traveling abroad and taking classes in other countries while in college.

The fair aims to promote education abroad, and will have exchange students from some of the host countries available to answer questions regarding studying and living in their home countries. There will also be agencies that specialize in education abroad, drawings and prizes to be won.

St. Cloud State has offered study abroad programs for 40 years, with the Alnwick, England, program presently celebrating its 30th year. Between 400 and 450 students from St. Cloud State study abroad every year, although with the current economic situation that number has decreased. Factors such as a parent losing a job or students having to work full-time to support themselves affect enrollment.

Nichole Pazdernik, director of education abroad for St. Cloud State, recommends that students should consider a semester or year abroad early in their college careers as it can give them a wider area of study. Freshmen and sophomores are eligible to participate in the program and due to their college level, can take a variety of courses that are not focused on their majors. This gives them more options in their course work and could help them decide on a major or minor.

Pazdernik recommends studying abroad for the global perspective it gives an individual, a wider world view though interacting with other cultures and the self confidence and independence that comes from being away from one’s home country. In addition to this, due to the changing demographics of the U.S., employers want employees who have cross-cultural communication skills.

Students are encouraged to visit the fair to learn more about studying abroad for a semester or a year. Entrance is free and open to all students.
