The front steps of Whitney House.
Nine sites in St. Cloud’s historic South Side University neighborhood will be on display during the June 11 St. Cloud Historic Home Tour and Wine Tasting.
The $12 advance tickets are available at Coborn’s on Cooper Avenue, Cashwise Video in Waite Park, Byerly’s and Coborn’s in Sauk Rapids. The same-day tickets will cost $15.
The 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. event begins at the St. Cloud State University Welcome Center at Coborn Plaza, 355 Fifth Ave. S., where tickets will be sold and tour booklets needed for entry to the sites will be available. The booklets have a map with all sites for the self-guided tour. Descriptions of each house on the tour also are included. Cookies and coffee will be provided.
The Welcome Center also houses an historical exhibit about the South Side, which has architecturally significant structures built between the 1890s and the 1930s.
Tour stops include Victorian yellow brick homes and examples of Tudor Revival, Four Square and Georgian Revival homes. The homes range from utilitarian to stately and including a home under renovation.
A highlight is the Whitney House on the east side of campus, a home built by A.G. and Alice Wheelock Whitney that became a center of St. Cloud social life in the early 20th century. The Whitney House will include information about a 1941 Eleanor Roosevelt visit and the history of the Reading Room women’s organization -- all provided by the American Association of University Women.
Wine tasting will be hosted at one of the sites from 1-3 p.m.
The tour supports the City of St. Cloud’s century homes recognition program and other initiatives that encourage interest in the neighborhood history and revitalization, including restoration of historic Barden Park, the City’s oldest park.
The tour and wine-tasting event are sponsored by the St. Cloud Historic and Neighborhood Preservation Association and the South Side University Neighborhood Association.
