Design guru to speak

Steven McCarthy, professor of design at the University of Minnesota, will speak April 13 in Kiehle Visual Arts Center.
An award-winning graphic design guru with a strong theoretical background, museum experience and a long list of exhibitions and journal articles will speak 1 p.m. April 13 in Kiehle Visual Arts Center.
The one-hour presentation in Room G14 is titled "Open Quote, Underscore, Closed Quote: Steven McCarthy on Design Authorship."

McCarthy, who is a professor of design in the University of Minnesota's College of Design, holds three art degrees, including a master's of fine art from Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif.
He also directs the U of M's Graphic Design Program.
McCarthy's research interests include artists’ books, professional graphic design practice, publication design, identity design, web design, interactive multimedia, design history and contemporary criticism.

Born in Bordeaux, France, McCarthy is a descendant of the "Wild Geese," the Irish mercenary soldiers who fought for pay in Europe for parts of three centuries.
