Two St. Cloud State alumni were part of a television special that earned three Sports Emmy® nominations.

Matt Hendricks '02, a forward for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), and Mike Oliver '04, a video producer, were part of Home Box Office's “24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic,” which aired in four episodes this winter on the premium cable television network.

The nominations are for Outstanding Edited Sports Special, Outstanding Post Produced Audio/Sound and the Dick Schaap Writing Award.

Winners will be honored during a May 2 ceremony in New York City.

Hendricks attended Blaine High School and skated for St. Cloud State from 2000-04, serving his senior year as team captain. He holds a bachelor's degree in applied psychology. 

Capitals' coach, Bruce Boudreau said of Hendricks in the show's second episode: "When things aren't going the way you want them to go, you need guys like Matt Hendricks. He's got your back."

Hendricks has made his mark in the NHL as a checking forward who occasionally drops his gloves to fight on behalf of his teammates.

Oliver, a 2004 graduate, majored in mass communications and minored in film studies.

A video producer for Los Angeles-based DLP Entertainment, Oliver is currently working on's "The Big Game," which airs late-night on FOX television stations.

At St. Cloud State, Oliver was the executive producer for Husky Productions, which broadcasts Husky Hockey games on Charter cable television in Minnesota.

The Sports Emmy nominations were announced March 22 by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Hendricks and Oliver will be featured in the upcoming issue of Outlook, the magazine for alumni and friends of the university.
