Saturday, November 20, 2010

President Earl H. Potter III will hear comment and answer questions on a proposed academic reorganization model 2 p.m. Dec. 1 in Atwood Ballroom.

Provost Devinder Malhotra e-mailed a proposed reorganization model to all faculty and staff Nov. 12.

Academic reorganization, in concert with staff/administration reorganization, are expected to help trim $14 million from the St. Cloud State budget that takes effect July 1.

President Earl H. Potter III is expected to announce academic reorganization decisions Dec. 10.

The model calls for the university's academic functions to be organized into colleges, schools, college-level programs, departments, programs, and institutes and centers.

"During spring semester, we will begin the transition to our new structure that will allow us to capture the necessary savings for FY12, but the transition will not be complete by June 30," said Malhotra in a Nov. 12 letter that accompanied the proposed reorganizational model.

"I expect it will take another year or more to complete all elements of the restructuring. Even when the reorganization is complete, we must make a commitment to evaluate and assess our structure and be open to change over time," Malhotra said.

Themes guiding academic reorganization include:

  • Improve organizational connectedness so information can be more easily shared
  • Facilitate inter- and multi-disciplinary work and innovation by providing structures and systems that help emerging programs thrive
  • Embed flexibility and feedback loops into systems and structures
  • Decrease administrative overhead
