Dean DeVriese dies

The late Todd J. DeVriese, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities.

Todd DeVriese, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities at St. Cloud State University since 2009, has died in New Delhi, India, while on a U.S. Department of Education week-long study tour.

DeVriese, 50, was in India with a three-person delegation from St. Cloud State who were part of a larger group of U.S. higher education government officials and high-level administrators from 10 colleges and universities.

They were on a study tour as part of the International Academic Partnership Program which seeks to increase the number of international partnerships between higher education institutions in the U.S. and those in India.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. 

St. Cloud State is conferring with U.S. Embassy officials on details surrounding the death.  Funeral arrangements are pending.                               

“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dean DeVriese’s family,” said President Earl H. Potter III.  “He was an impassioned leader who had made a significant impact on his college and on the University during his time at St. Cloud State.”

He is survived by his wife, Leila DeVriese, an assistant professor of global studies at Hamline University, and a young son, Johann.

DeVriese came to St. Cloud State in mid-2009 from Texas Tech University where he was director of the School of Art and an art professor.

Earlier in his career, he was an associate professor of art at The Ohio State University and had been interim dean for Arts and Sciences and a department chair at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s in science from Illinois State University and his master’s in fine arts from The Ohio State University.

As dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities at St. Cloud State, DeVriese was responsible for undergraduate and graduate programs in nine departments and more than 20 disciplines in music, theatre, film studies, dance, art, English, foreign languages and literature, philosophy, communication disorders, communication studies and mass communications.
