We Are One event
Wednesday, April 21, 2010St. Cloud State University faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear green in celebration of campus and community diversity during the “WE ARE ONE (green) DAY” event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 22, on the Atwood Mall.
The event, sponsored by Yolanda Lehman’s Race in America class, invites campus and community to mingle and enjoy fun, food and activities focused on building relationships, raising awareness about the We Are One Movement, supporting the We Are One Scholarship Fund, and educating people about the importance of being actively anti-racist on and off of campus.
In addition, the event will celebrate the life and legacy of Ms. Dorothy Irene Height, who for the last half century dedicated her life to the active pursuit of human rights and equality for all people. She passed on Tuesday at the age of 98, due to natural causes. “This day will be a celebration of her life, and everyone is invited to come enjoy the festivities,” Lehman said.
“Ms. Dorothy Irene Height was the inspiration for the We Are One Movement on the St. Cloud State campus,” Lehman said. “She taught us, as she wrote in Open Wide the Freedom Gates, that ‘Ambition is essential, but when you are self centered, you stand in your own way. You will accomplish a great deal when you don’t worry about who will get the credit. When you feel free enough to bring up race yourself, then I will know that I have done my job.’”
The class will be distributing green bracelets and leading interactive activities such as face painting, bean bag toss, ladder golf and other games. All proceeds from the event will go to the We Are One Scholarship Fund which will support one student per year with financial need, academic excellence and a demonstrated commitment to being an active anti-racist. This fund, for which Lehman’s class members already have raised $4,200, is being established through the SCSU Foundation, and donations may be made at the event or sent to the SCSU Foundation, Alumni House, St. Cloud State University 720 Fourth Ave. S, St. Cloud, MN 56301-4498. Please be sure to write checks to SCSU Foundation/We Are One Campaign.
