UTVS News, St. Cloud State University’s student run television station’s news division, and the St. Cloud Times have partnered in an effort to expand local online news content.

Student reporters from UTVS News have been featured on the newspapers website since Jan. 25.

“The UTVS project gives us a chance to offer more local news videos to our readers,” John Bodette, executive editor for the St. Cloud Times, said. “This is a good idea for both sides of the project because we get a chance to have more local news get coverage and the students get a chance to work with professionals and get feedback on their work.”

In an initial attempt to expand UTVS News’ audience and content, Ryan Ruud, of Roseau, Minn., and Raquel Hellman, of Burnsville, Minn., UTVS news directors, helped launch a new website.

Under the consultation of Mark Mills, mass communications department chair, the two sought out a partnership with the St. Cloud Times to further the stations exposure.

“The partnership gives greater exposure to the student journalists, the department, the student organization (UTVS) and the university as a whole,” Ruud said. “It’s a win-win all around. We get hands on editorial experiences while providing phenomenal online and on-air content to the Granite City.”

Ruud and Hellman meet weekly with Times reporters to collaborate on story development.

“We have been impressed with the quality of the news coverage provided by the UTVS staffers,” Bodette said. “They have been professional in every way. We are looking forward to working with them to bring even more local news to our readers on sctimes.com.”

The partnership gives students a more diverse journalism background and experience in convergence journalism, while providing the Times with more online content.

“The world is all about innovation,” Bodette said. “This partnership is a splendid example of an innovative partnership between the Times and the University.”

UTVS is a student organization at St. Cloud State University and is one of three student media organizations on campus, along with KVSC (campus radio station) and The Chronicle (campus newspaper). Locally, UTVS is carried by Charter Communications on channel 21, and streamed live.
