Evening of percussion
Friday, November 20, 2009
Deondre Smiles, percussionist and Husky Sports band member.
Harmonious, harsh, pounding, sibilant, clanging and concussive -- the full range of percussion sounds can be heard 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in Ritsche Auditorium.
"An Evening of Music for Percussion" is a collaboration between the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School Marimba Choir and three St. Cloud State percussion groups: Husky Sports Band Drum Line, Percussion Ensemble and the World Drumming Group.

Musical selections will range from the xylophone ragtime of George Hamilton Green (1893-1970) to the ultramodern sounds of Frank Zappa (1940-1993). Green was a xylophonist and composer whose works remain standards for the instrument. Known best as the songwriter-guitarist for the Mothers of Invention, Zappa was an accomplished drummer and devotee of percussion-based avant-garde composers such as Edgard Varèse(1883-1965).
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and non-St. Cloud State students. One free ticket available with a St. Cloud State ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The concert is sponsored by the Percussion Collective, the Music Department's percussion groups dedicated to performing 20th century, folk, chamber and newly commissioned works.
