Forensic team wins award

The St. Cloud State University Speech and Debate Team received the Widvey Team Quality Award at the Jackrabbit Jousts Speech and Debate Invitational at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., Oct. 9-10. Team quality awards are calculated by dividing the team sweeps points by the number of entries for comprehensive programs.
The tournament was attended by 12 schools from 5 states. Individually, sophomore Ben Kaufman, Sauk Rapids, Minn., led the St. Cloud State squad by placing first in Dramatic Interpretation, first in Prose Interpretation, and third in Program of Oral Interpretation. Sophomore Thomas Opatz, Cambridge, Minn., followed by finishing second in Dramatic Interpretation, fourth in Poetry Interpretation, and fourth in Program of Oral Interpretation.
In addition, senior Onome Egi, St. Paul, Minn., and sophomore Tony Aliota, Zimmerman, Minn., competed in Parliamentary Debate and finished with a 2-2 win/lose record. Egi also finished ninth in Impromptu Speaking while Aliota competed in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Freshman Scott Athey, Milbank, S.D., and freshman Heather Simmon, Becker, Minn., also competed in Parliamentary Debate. Athey competed in Extemporaneous Speaking and finished tenth. Finally, junior Elizabeth Ong’era, St. Cloud, Minn., competed in Poetry Interpretation.
Competition in speech and debate, also known as forensics, teaches students important public speaking, research, organizational, leadership, group work, and critical thinking skills.
The activities are open to all students in good academic standing. The St. Cloud State Speech & Debate team is coached by Scott Wells, Eric Short, Jocelyn Walsh, and Andrea Lovoll.
The Speech and Debate team is one of nearly 200 student organizations at St. Cloud State that give students leadership, management, and volunteer service/learning opportunities and foster an active campus community.
