St. Cloud State's Web-based e-mail login reminds users to strengthen their passwords.

Students, staff and faculty are strengthening password protection for information systems they use, such as HuskyNet accounts and telephone voice mail.

Learning Resources and Technology Services staff are supporting campus efforts to meet a Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system mandate.

HuskyNetID password must meet or exceed the following criteria:

  • Change at least every 180 days
  • Have a minimum of 8 characters (letters, numbers or special characters)
  • Have three of the four types of characters (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, special characters)

Passwords should be strengthened by Oct. 1, according to Darrin Printy, the university's IT security coordinator.

Users should begin updating passwords now rather than waiting until the deadline.

"If you have an account, an existing account, and you haven't changed your password in a while, go ahead and do it now," Printy said. "We'd prefer not to have 12,000 or 15,000 people coming up with an error message saying you need to change your password by Oct. 1."
